Putien

Putien is a Michelin one-star restaurant located at Kitchener Road and it is also the first branch of the Putian group of restaurants to be opened in 2000. Putien is one of Singapore's finest restaurant that has carved a niche for itself offering authentic Heng Hwa cuisine (a type of Chinese cuisine) in Singapore. It provides a tantalising collection of dishes using fresh and high quality ingredients that are suitable for family gatherings, large and small groups as well as for individual diners.

The Putien people are known for putting their guests before themselves – and the service level is certainly better here than in many other similar simple restaurants.

MUST TRY: Indulge in their mouth-watering dishes such as stir-fried yam, braised homemade bean curd and the shredded pork with sesame bun.

 Background of Putien
The PUTIEN brand traces its roots to its namesake city of Putian – a beautiful coastal suburb in Fujian, with rich cultural history and storied traditions since its settlement over almost one and a half millennium ago. Their delicacies will always carry the essence of our coastal city heritage – fresh, light and invigorating.

– the tale of The Egg & The Guest –
Once upon a time in Putian City, there lived a poor family. All the adults worked the fields in the day, leaving Grandma alone to tend the house.
One day, a guest paid this family a visit. With nothing but four freshly laid eggs to offer, Grandma boiled them and served it to the guest, much to the chagrin of her little grandson.
Even the customaries of the Putian people – that guests should never finish the food they are offered out of kindness to their hosts – the tale had it that she could not save but one egg for him as the guest was from a distant land who was unfamiliar with local tradition.
Grandma turned to the sobbing boy and consoled him: “We will always offer the best to our guests, no matter how little we can afford. That is our way, my child.” Every kid that grew up in Putian City knows the tale of The Egg and the Guest, for it truly embodies the essence of the Putian people – putting their guests before themselves, giving them none other than the very best hospitality.

Tom Yum Kungfu

I believe it is difficult to find another place like Tom Yum Kungfu. A cool contemporary art decked out with retro 80’s-video-game mosaics and blasting Thai pop in the background. Its unique atmosphere is one of the reasons why you should choose to visit them.

Tom Yum Kungfu serves authentic Thai cuisine and is famous for their signature dish, Tom Yum Soups perfected through a refinement of the best traditional Thai recipes. Unsurprisingly, the selection of tom yum soup varieties is fantastic and the complex and the varied tastes is incredible. Their traditional charcoal mookata with a double-decker grill structure that looks like a UFO is also a must try item on the menu. Its distinctive taste really differs from other common mookata in Singapore.

It has a host of other trademark favourites and specials, like a gigantic seafood omelette or addictive deep-fried kangkong to snack on. It keeps the locals and the travellers keep coming back in droves.

In addition, there is a small stage for live traditional Chinese music “Suzhou Pingtan” performance which is storytelling through singing with 3 stringed lutes and pipa.

Nakhon Kitchen

There is always a line queueing up outside the Nakhon Kitchen during dinner time. The restaurant has gained a reputation for serving delicious authentic Thai food at reasonable prices. The dishes are cooked by native Thai chefs and served by Thai staff as well.

The food served in Nakhon Kitchen is quite affordable with no GST and services charge. Most of the dishes are listed under categories such as  Chicken, Pork, Vegetables, Rice and Noodles which are all reasonably priced at S$6.00. For seafood dishes, the prices range between S$10.00 and S$12.00 per dish. A must try dish here is the clear Tom Yam Soup ($6) , it is extremely spicy which is a reward for those who love spicy food. Blu Kouzina

Blu Kouzina is a favourite destination for authentic Greek cuisine in Singapore. This restaurant is rated very high for their casual cosy ambience and food. The decoration of the restaurant was impressive with its Mediterranean vibe. From the wooden tables and chairs to the napkins and the three-level interior as well as the classical seaside white and blue representing the colour scheme. Blu Kouzina serves authentic Greek cuisine with fresh and quality ingredients which are used in both traditional and creative contemporary dishes. Some of their ingredients are especially flown in from Greece.

My Makan Place

Owned by a family of four, My Makan Place is a newly-opened restaurant selling Indonesian fusion food that resides in Tanjong Katong. Although they are Chinese Singaporeans, cooking Indonesian food has always been the mum’s passion. Previously working as hawkers, they are also passionate foodies who have had 20 years of experience in making Mee Rebus and Mee Siam.

Pretty good homely comfort food at affordable prices with most ingredients made from scratch with no msg added. You can try the Mee Siam ($5.90) that’s best paired with classic bee hoon (thin rice vermicelli) for soaking up the fusion of belachan, assam and salted soy beans flavours. My Makan Place offers five choices of noodle, including yellow noodle, kway teow (flat rice noodles), udon and ramen – which would make an interesting combination with Mee Siam. Or go for the rich Mee Rebus ($5.90) that features a richer-than-usual savoury sweet potato gravy. If you don’t like spices, consider the Beef Noodle Soup ($9.90) comprising of tender braised beef short ribs and beef meatballs in an aromatic beef broth.

Seoul Yummy

Seoul Yummy is a good place to gather for dinner after work. After a tired day of work, you would want to chat with friends and gather at some nice places for a good dinner.  The side dishes at Seoul Yummy are free flow. There are cold toufu, ikan billis and kimchi which are very nice. For appetizer, you can choose potato pancake and it is actually not bad too.  The potato slices are completely immersed in egg pasture and then deep fried till crispy.  They cut the pancake into 4 equal portions before serving.  For the signature dish, you must definitely go for the army stew. On the menu the army stew is stated for pax of 2 but however the proportion is just nice for 3 persons of average appetite. There are meals with set prices that come with the appetiser, the dessert and the army stew as main dish. Other than the army stew there is also the ginseng chicken soup.($13.90), it has half a chicken and besides the provided rice bowl, there is also glutinous rice inside the chicken. The soup has a heavy but delectable herbal taste that is said to be able to make you more alert for the rest of the day. Seoul Yummy also has set meals that consist of rice or glass noodle with soup and side dishes. Their glass noodle is very good, tasty, silky and smooth.

The food served was generally good and the service is definitely top notch. And if you are the one who loves those korean side dishes a lot, it's a place for you to go because it's free flow. By the way they have 8 outlets in Singapore, Will not be disappointed if you are to visit any one of these branches.

PS. Café at Dempsey Hill

PS. Cafe has many locations including Palais Renaissance, Paragon, A.S.H Park, One Fullerton and Raffles City but the one located on Harding Road at Dempsey Hill is absolutely eye-catching.  PS. Cafe is hidden amongst many trees and is easily missed.  If you are driving then the surrounding area, including Dempsey Hill offers lots of free outdoor parking and there is a valet service on weekends. Since this place is always busy, it’s a great place to plan a family dinner, Friends night outing or couple dating will not have to deal with the hassle of heading over to Clarke Quay and deterred by a crowd. Both the service and food preparation time is rather slow at PS. Café Harding, maybe is because of the relaxed atmosphere out in the Dempsey area. Although the place is usually packed, it overlooks an open field which gives it that semi-peaceful atmosphere.  PS. Cafe has both indoor, outdoor and lounge seating. Try requesting for a seat by the window if sitting indoors is an option.

PS. Cafe serves a variety of food – salads, pastas, steaks and sandwiches and their portion sizes are quite large. Everyone who goes to PS Cafe in most locations would agree that it is a must to order their Truffle Fries because it’s TRUFFLE and the fries are crispy and thin like shoestrings. They also serve many types of fresh juices, tea, mocktails and cocktails, however the main attraction is their fabulous desserts. One piece can easily be shared with 3-4 people. Even if you don’t have room for dessert, make sure you take away something from their large cake selection – you definitely don’t want to miss out.

Tips:  Make sure you make a reservation well in advance!!!

IndoChine At Supertree Grove

As the only establishment atop the SuperTree Grove, SuperTree by IndoChine is situated perfectly on the tallest structure in Gardens by the Bay in Singapore, equipped fully with air conditioned lounge with a 360 degree unobstructed view of the entire Gardens by the Bay on one side and the Singapore Central Business District on the other. The restaurant is built from rice husks and recyclable PET plastics instead of unsustainable timber. A heat exchange system that heats water which is used in the restaurant with the hot air by-product from air conditioning also ensures that the SuperTree stays true to its green roots.

Finally I have managed to have lunch at the SuperTree IndoChine as I have always plan to come here but never have a chance.  I brought my 2 best friends who were celebrating the recent return of a friend from overseas and they were ready to splurge. Expectations were high as IndoChine has never disappointed in their other locations. We had made a booking for lunch so there is need to pay for the privilege of going to the rooftop first.
