Curious Palette

By the same team behind Stranger’s Reunion, Curious Palette was established as a quaint cafe-restaurant located at the end of Prinsep Street. What sets Curious Palette itself apart from the strong competition of cafes around is its new menu which offers an inventive variety of snacks, sweets, lunch, and dinner. It offers more than just regular cafe food and includes more ‘atas’ (Singlish for high-end) restaurant dishes too. In other words, it’s not your typical avocado toast, eggs benny, or ah-zhar bowl cafe.

Fried cauliflower. (Image credit: Curious Palette)

Sauces and dips are made in-house, like the sweet and savory fish sauce caramel, which is drizzled on battered and fried cauliflower ($11.90). A healthier version of snacks that will leave you popping into your mouth while conversations go around you.

Prawn mentaiko belacan pasta. (Image credit: Curious Palette)

The Mentaiko Belacan Pasta (S$18.90) comes with three charcoal grilled tiger prawns, sakura ebi, and a pile of pasta tossed in a creamy mentaiko and butter sauce. The sauce is very creamy from the mentaiko and with the mixed of a slight heat from the belacan and chili powder, this dish is 100% slurp-worthy.

Curious Palette’s interior is worth applauding too. It has just the right mix between minimalist and Scandinavian, with a good mix of rustic, heavy wooden furniture, lush greenery, cement flooring and hanging light bulbs. During the day, it has natural light shining in through the floor-to-ceiling doors and windows, which makes the whole place cozier with its furniture, paintings and art installations around.

Hua Yi Kitchen

When it comes to XLB (Xiao Long Bao), people often think of Din Tai Fung or Paradise Dynasty. However, back when before these chains were opened, Hua Yi Kitchen was the must-go place to satisfy your XLB cravings. Hidden in a quiet corner of Orchard, this homely eatery impresses with its selection of Shanghainese dishes.

Here are the few recommendations which you must try!

(Images credit: Eatbook sg)

Minced Pork Noodles ($6.80+). Also known as zha jiang mian, mixture of hand-pulled noodles dipped in a thick gravy and garnished with chye sim, julienned cucumbers, and sliced chillies.

(Images credit: Eatbook sg)

Dry Chicken Cutlet Noodles ($7.80+). This is a dish with robust flavours as you feel an explosive burst of salty and peppery notes. The fried chicken cutlet is crunchy and juicy, topped with their house-made dressing.

And of course, the xiao long bao! The Steamed Juicy Minced Pork Dumpling ($6.50+) is very filling with its thick broth, definitely able to rival those dished up at Din Tai Fung. If you are ever in the vicinity, especially near Orchard Isetan and is looking for a place out of the conventional, check out this delightful little place for some good Shanghainese food. This is perfect for a place to chat and unwind, especially after all that shopping!

Muchachos

Looking for a quick burrito fix in Singapore? Muchachos is the place to go! Located amidst the Central Business District (used to be at Keong Siak), the concept is inspired by Subway and Chipotle whereby you can build your own burrito from your choice of protein (or greens for vegans) salsa, filings, and sides. The burritos are large enough to be shared by two persons. Chips and guacamole do come at an extra price but they’re worth it.

Despite the change of location, the folks have retained the favourites such as the California burrito ($13.50) and carnitas quesadilla ($12) are very much present in the menu. New food items like the cheeseburger ($12 single, $16.50 double) and buttermilk fried chicken ($12- $16.50) are highly recommended too!
However, do expect to queue for a bit especially during lunch hours!

TBB Safari - Tiong Bahru Bakery’s safari-themed tent

(Images credit: discovery sg)

Now you can soak in some African vibes in Singapore! The well known Tiong Bahru Bakery has opened its fifth outlet – a safari-themed space nestled in the lush surrounds of Dempsey.

TBB Safari is a 46-seater cafe in canvas tent with rustic furnitures, trunks, camping style deck chairs and rugs from the Middle East so it feels like a tropical garden. A lot of efforts and thoughts were put in for this creation. Unfortunately, you can’t find any wild animals there, but there are bunnies and chickens at the back garden!

We all understand how insanely hot Singapore’s weather can be, but fret not! TBB Safari was designed with an all new wooden gazebo and eco-friendly Airbitat coolers set at 25 degrees to regulate the temperature. Although the cafe is located outdoor, it is being surrounded by Dempsey’s lush greenery, which allow you to connect with nature in maximum comfort.

You can get their signature pastries and breads at the new outlet, along with some Safari exclusive items. Specially crafted menu for the health conscious are the anti-inflammatory caffeine free drinks and their new power breakfast jars packed with fruits and herbs plucked straight from the on-site garden.

Baristart Cafe

The Popular Hokkaido Cafe, Baristart Cafe has arrived in Singapore, Tuas Street.
Being the first oversea branch, we are fortunate to have the famous Japanese cafe from Hokkaido, Baristart Cafe to join the F&B scene in Singapore. Baristart Cafe first started out as a humble coffee stand in Sapporo where they eventually garnered popularity due to the milk they used.

You might be thinking, what is so special about the milk they used ? It is no ordinary milk and it’s like the ‘wagyu’ in the milk world, called the BIEI Jersey milk. This premium quality milk is sourced from a rare breed of brown jersey cattles which makes up barely 1% of the cow population in Hokkaido, thus being extremely exclusive!

To even better news, the owner, Yuuki Takechi, is here in Singapore till April to make your coffee. He is a two-time champion of ‘UCC Coffee Masters Latte Art Section in Hokkaido Region’, so you can be rest assured that your premium coffee would be delicious.

The signature Latte ($6.70) is significantly different from the others. The BIEI Jersey milk makes the coffee more rich in taste and velvety, with a tinge of sweetness.

Is this not the cutest dessert you have seen?! This adorable bear shaped shaved ice - Shiro Kuma ($9.80) is drizzled with Hokkaido BIEI Jersey Milk and topped with a scoop of vanilla ice cream. Hidden underneath is a variety of fresh fruits, including orange, mango, white peach and strawberry. It comes with a choice of homemade syrup: Coffee, Hokkaido BIEI Jersey Milk, Strawberry, Mango or Green Tea.
