Dumpling Darlings

Shoutout to the dumpling fans! The folks behind Lola’s Cafe had opened their new creation “Dumpling Darlings” last year in October and we heard a lot of good reviews about it.

Their menu is pretty straightforward, serving dumplings and noodles. Six savory dumplings, one dessert dumpling, and three noodles. They dish out lunch sets too. At $16++, you’ll get a bowl of noodles, a dumpling dish, and a drink.
The fillings used in the dumplings were drawn by inspiration from cultures across the world. The six flavours are Spicy Sichuan, Veggie Mandu, Momo Curry, Fried Pierogi and Smoked Duck Dumplings. For example, the Fried Pierogi is an Eastern European inspired dumpling packed with truffle potato, smoked bacon and cheese.

The Spicy Sichuan is available in a pan-fried or boiled version which is similar to the classic “Hong You Chao Shou” (Sichuan Red Oil Wontons).

For the noodles, they are made fresh daily with three ingredients of flour, eggs and salt. You can choose from – Miso Mushroom, Braised Pork and Sichuan Pork. The word ‘Sichuan’ might scare you a little but the spicy level was on a scale of 1-2 out of 10.

My favourite flavour would be “Fried Pierogi” as it was an interesting creation with their filing. The fragrance of truffle oil literally wafted out the moment I bit it. Each bite gave a smooth and creamy texture with a salty and smoky flavour from the bacon. The dish comes with Sriracha crema which tasted amazing when you dipped the dumpling in it, though non-spicy eater should definitely avoid this combination.
A note to take: The crowd gets really crazy during lunch hour, along with a queue at the door, so I would suggest coming during dinnertime instead!

Botanico at The Garage

Originally a place for college professors to park their vehicles back in the 1920s, The Garage is now an F&B destination at the Singapore Botanic Gardens. Comprising of two concepts, the first floor is Bee’s Knees which is more cafe-style liked while on the second floor, the Botanico is a contemporary bistro offering a seasonal driven menu. It features a lush indoor dining space, an alfresco, an air-cooled bar and a lounge surrounded by plenty of greenery.

The interior of Botanico emphasizes the conservation of the original rafters and window shutters throughout the renovation so as to give a balance of elegance and simplicity look while retaining its old charm.

The outdoor dining area is another choice where diners can have their dinner as well. Fret not for the heat, the team has got ample outdoor air conditioning installed at the sidewalls, sufficient to create that cooling ambience to make alfresco dining an enjoyable experience in Singapore’s tropical climate. As the sun sets, the twinkling fairy lights adorning the walls will come on, bringing a dash of whimsical to the dining experience.

Seasonal Oyster ($6 each), topped with a chili-shallot-fish sauce dressing.

Stockyard Wagyu Petit Tender ($34). It was cooked slightly burnt on the outside to highlight the contrast between its beefy flavour and the slightly spicy green sriracha.

Lemongrass Pannacotta ($10), this dessert is served with homemade ginger ice-cream, diced green apples and a lemon Swiss meringue.

Jalapeño Ice Cream ($11), tasting both sweet and savoury, it pairs well with charred Sarawak pineapple.
Botanico at The Garage offers people a way to reconnect with nature through the enjoyment of the thoughtfully executed food. This will definitely be a good dining place to bring your dates or friends!
