Haji Lane

This tiny Haji Lane is hidden away in the heart of the Muslim quarter in the vicinity of Beach road and Arab street. So named because in the past, the Middle Easterners who were on their way for the Mecca Pilgrimage would make stopover in Singapore and they would buy food and other necessities here. Today, the shophouses located along the Haji Lane are converted into local boutiques, each with its own cute looking facade and brightly painted walls. It is a very small street but each store has its own little world of treasures. It is a fashionista's paradise with very little fanfare. Some shops even have steps to narrow staircase and then to its second floor. You will find everything from the hipster to antique to the vintage and even to one of a kind item. So it is a great pleasure to pick up souvenirs or buy some local crafts and clothing of different cultures from all over Asia as well. Definitely you can spend not few but many hours here. After your tiring shopping you can catch some live music and visit some of the restaurants in the vicinity There is a wide variety of restaurants. They offer local Singaporean cuisine, regular burgers, Indian food, Middle Eastern dishes, Chinese dishes and many more. If you visit during the night hours after 6-7 pm this street becomes alive with activities. There are road side bands and drinks. It is a fun place to visit.

A trip to Haji Lane is all about the experience. Even if you leave without buying anything, most likely you will be satisfied.

How to get there:

Take the East-West line, alight Bugis MRT then exit Victoria Street. Once outside, face right and keep walking straight along Victoria Street. Then turn right on to Ophir Street, left at North Bridge Road and finally, right on to Haji Lane.

Victoria's Secret Flagship Store- Mandarin Gallery

Singapore finally has its own Victoria’s Secret full assortment flagship store – the first in Asia – at the Mandarin Gallery. The grand opening was on Friday 18th November 2016. The brand was founded in 1977 by the late Roy Raymond after he felt embarrassed purchasing lingerie for his wife in a department store. In 1982, Victoria’s Secret was acquired by the American fashion retailer L Brands, which made US$12.7 billion (S$18.11 billion) in sales last year, up from US$11.5 billion the previous year. There are now more than 1,600 Victoria’s Secret stores worldwide.

Victoria’s Secret flagship store is a full assortment store. From lingeries, fragrances, beauty products, sleepwear, sports gear, bags, to apparels and even bedroom slippers, you can shop to your heart's content with new designs dropping on every two to six weeks. You can browse through the wide assortment of Victoria's Secret signature lingerie, Very Sexy, Dream Angels, Bombshell, Victoria Sport, as well as Victoria's Secret PINK. PINK has got new arrivals coming in every week or two and it is a youthful collection that is targeted at the younger crowd.

If you are looking for a gift for your BFF or your lady but you are not exactly sure what to get (especially for the guys), there are ready gift sets for you so that you don't have to worry about getting all the wrong items! Prices range from $19 for a lip gloss to about $800 for a silk robe for the Victoria’s Secret Designer collection.

City Plaza

City Plaza is an 18-storey high-rise building which was completed in 1972. It’s heydays were during the 80s and the 90s. Now, it look like a pretty shabby place and most people would look at its rundown exterior and may not give it a second thought, let alone going in to explore. However, on the contrary it is a haven on the inside with so much to offer.

City Plaza is a hub for fashionable items at wholesale prices. These prices-friendly wholesale shops in City Plaza are where many fashion bloggers and retailers buy unique fashion items in bulk for their own shops. So shopping at City Plaza helps you to save a lot of money where the prices can be just half of the value for the same items displayed at the blog shops.  From homemade toys to clothes, one can find practically anything here. However, I feel that this place can be made to look more attractive. Despite being around for so long, it has not been renovated and it's appearance can potentially turn off would-be shoppers. If you are looking for traditional costumes for a special occasion or just want to “spoil market” during Racial Harmony Day, check out the galore of traditional costumes and take your pick. With saris to cheongsams available here, you'll be spoilt for choice.

The shopping mall is only a few minutes away by foot from the Paya Lebar MRT station. There are public bus services such as bus no. 2, 7, 13, 17 and 21 which stop at the Tanjong Katong Complex, which is located opposite the mall.

Sephora

Founded in France in 1970 by Dominique Mandonnaud, Sephora is a beauty retail departmental store operating in 27 countries worldwide. It is managed by the Louis Vuitton Moet Hennessy (LVMH) group. Sephora stores are designed to be open with clean lines, splashes of colour and their relatively large floor space is organised neatly. While Sephora caters mostly to women, they do carry a line of products for men as well.

Sephora is essentially a cosmetics wonderland. All the brands stocked here are high-end and of top quality. Some of the products are Sephora exclusive, which makes it a rarity to find it anywhere else on the island. Sephora's the place to have any kind of blemish fixed. It's like a box that has everything you need in it, a variety of products so wide that you would definitely be able to find the one that's "made for you".The service staff is always ever friendly and ready to help. If they see you browsing, they never fail to render their services with a big smile and offer you a basket.

The Lucky Plaza shopping center is located along Orchard road situated in the middle of Singapore luxury area but it is also the only shopping centre to cater to budget shoppers on Orchard road. They are selling casual clothes, simple accessories, sunglasses, low-end watches, candy and chocolates, souvenirs, second hand books, electronic items, medical products and many more. There are many stores selling branded perfumes and surprisingly the prices are much cheaper than the normal shopping centres. The perfume store in Lucky Plaza also sell branded perfumes in sample sizes. The Lucky Plaza was built in 1981 which explains why there are not too many high end facilities but it is interesting to explore and discover unusual and old fashioned store fronts.

New2U Thrift Shop

In May 2000, the New2U Thrift Shop opened it’s doors. The shop is managed entirely by volunteers, some of whom have been volunteering with New2U for many years. The shop sells pre-loved clothing, accessories, household items, ornaments, books and more. All goods are donated, prices start from as low as $1.00. Proceeds from the store go towards Star Shelter and the various SCWO Initiatives.

One thing about visiting New2U: you have to be willing to scavenge and rummage through tons of clothes before being able to find suitable pieces. The designer and brand-new apparel located inside on the rack inside the store is worth a browse too.

New2U is definitely worth a visit, whether out of curiosity (if you've never been thrift shopping) or if you're looking out for cheap thrills. Anyway, if you visit this place while out on a shopping date and find it too disappointing, you can always visit Bugis Street, Bugis Plus or Bugis Junction nearby. However, do note that they close really early!

Chinatown

Chinese New Year has arrived and it is the exciting festive season of the year again. Visiting Chinatown during the Chinese New Year (CNY) shopping season is mandatory for many, not just because one would like to go there to soak up the festive atmosphere but more importantly it is the preferred place to buy most of your CNY goodies. If you do not mind squeezing in the massive crowd, then going to the Chinatown on dates closer to the commencement of the Chinese New Year will be the best time because by then the vendors would have lower the selling prices. Some selling prices are even reduced by almost 50% especially the perishables like the Taiwanese sausages, sweets, fruits, bak kwa, pineapple tarts and new year goodies. Now that the Chinese New Year holidays have started, the vendor stalls lining the streets in the Chinatown have disappeared. So is the crowd. Usually by the 3rd or 4th day of the Chinese New Year, normalcy will return to Chinatown as the workers return back to work in the shop houses as well as the shop offices.
